The Collection (descending) creates a single object from the holdings of one museum. Over 100,000 works are ordered by date - descending in time from the 21st century - by collection, type, genre, location, and artist. Along with presenting the 5% of works exhibited in the museum at any one time, the piece also includes the other 95% in storage from textiles, hats, plates, glass, miniatures, baskets, reliquaries, statues, landscape paintings, portraits, coins, photographs, furniture, drawings, and manuscripts to over 60,000 works on paper, among others.

Originally created in 1999, the work was re-commissioned in 2005 for the opening of the de Young Museum designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron.
